Google has not yet built an operating system and Marissa mayer, the vice president of search products and user experience recently denied of any such possibility in future.
I still thought on this issue and just wildly thought of how the Operating system would look like. Being bad at photoshop and other image editors I thought I'd leave it to somebody else to put it on his blog, but the thing in my scope was to try and list the salient features of google OS, in case it comes. I've put a list of 5 such features.
Zero boot time : Yup, it sounds unpractical today and my XP, I feel takes an eternity to log on,more so if its AVG Antivrus starts scanning at start up. The puzzling part is that how is it achievable. Solution is simple. The PC will boot the boot OS, yes a boot OS for the OS. That boot OS will simply act as a platform for you to connect to the internet onto the google server and there your OS will lie, which will already be booted. SO you see, boot time is practically zero.
Security : My laptop is full of viruses. Even the antivirus gets puzzled figuring out what to do. Imagine gooogle using its security technology to do it for you. So you see the security lies in the hands of google and not your free antivirus.
Privacy : This seems quite vague, but let me tell you privacy could be more. Today you key in your password to log in to your laptop. Imagine a public/shared PC. Anyone can open, read and edit your documents and can take then in a thumb drive. Once you log out from your OS, the files on the server will automatically become inaccessible to all others.
License Cost : The cost of buying original softwares, word editors, antiviruses is high. Imagine all provided to free by google. The best of the tehnology for free.
File sharing : Today we email our files to send them to a remote desktop or pass them on through our thumb drive. In the google OS you will simply key in the google identity number(GIN) of your friend and simply push the file into his outdoor stack (A mail box).

Clean Internet Campaign

Today with terrorism on the rise we as responsible followers of humanity can take a step forward to make the internet a cleaner place. As you browse the internet on daily basis, watch videos on youtube and do a lot of social interactivty on the web, you might have observed a lot of comments, posts and threads that are full of hate, which is baseless and is intended to harm others. As responsible internet messiahs we can flag them, it only takes a few seconds or in case of hate mails, just delete them and forward a mail to all those who have received them to delete them. It could be a small step by a small group of people but as the number of profane internet geeks are good and run into millions, a few extra seconds could actually mean destroying the efforts of a few thousand insane internet users with an intention to harm others. But beware : Do not reply back to them with an anti hate mail or a comment. it'll just serve their cause. Best is to flag it. Chao!

Youtube addiction

Youtube: What makes you stay longer
A glance at the watch and oh! you've just spend an extra hour on youtube, the world's third largest visited website.
A cool video that you checked out let you to another video and that led to another and this continued till you realized that you had just spent some extra time, tubing on youtube.
I decided to look into what it was in the design that made us watch the extra videos and here is what I found.
#1 Related Videos concept
This is the section which is the on the right side of the video you are watching and contains the videos related to the current one. The advantage of this section is that it helps you find a video that might be more relevant or a in relation to what you are looking for.
#2 Videos recommended for you
This is something which went un-noticed since I used to directly search what I wanted. On the front page of Youtube this section comes below the featured video. The best part of this section is that it recommends you videos based on the those you have watched previously.
#3 Your Candidate
This part I thought is one of the best things Youtube has given to this world. Your candidate's channel on Youtube. Before the elections we get to know about the candidate only through news channels and party rallies. A Youtube channel of the candidate, where your candidate expresses his ideology and his agenda is something very valuable in-order to give a mass appeal. And yes, you can also contribute through Google checkout. Although I can't say much about the Obama-Hillary campaign, but I can surely say that at this pace youtube might soon overtake other video sources(television).
#4 Featured Video
The featured video is another cool feature. It helps you look outside you tube scope
#5 Most Active videos
Lastly, you can also see what the world has been watching. This is not one of the best things, I'd say about Youtube since the most active videos have the most freaky titles, which could lead you to an embarrassing situation.
Anything else that you think has kept you glued to Youtube, let me know

Chrome Firefox Internet Explorer: Browser war heats up

Three browsers on the web, the archaic Internet Explorer, the featured Firefox and the Gusto Chrome, compete for what could change the dynamics of web for ever. The browser war was earlier between internet explorer and google backed mozilla, which was more of a turf war between two industry giants. Now google has introduced its lethal weapon, which if hits the right spot, could simply kick out microsoft out of the web world.

Chrome on day one

I downloaded Chrome yesterday and despite all attempts by my hectic schedule and MBA preperation, I have finally managed some time to write a small post on Chrome fairs on day one. Back home from work, tired and exhausted I checked out my percentile of the mock MBA entrance test I gave last sunday. Although I just managed a 81 percentile, quite less from what I expected, there was something more in what i was viewing. The small bar on top of the browser made it possible for me to see the whole page without scrolling down, something which was good. It was just like watching a movie on your big screen TV. It is far better than the small cramped screen. The same was felt here. Chrome won the battle on day one as my Mozilla almost chocked my 512Mb RAM notebook. It would be still too early to stay that the success of Chrome is inexorable, I'd still say, it is very much on the cards.

Comcast limits internet usage

Digg - 250 GB Challenge & 5 Tools To Monitor Your Bandwidth [Giga Om]
[nytimes]
Comcast, one of the country’s largest Internet providers, said this week that it would place limits on customers’ broadband usage.Beginning Oct. 1, Comcast will put a 250 gigabyte-a-month cap on residential users. The limit will not affect most users, at least not in the short-term, but is certain to create tension as some technologies gain traction.
A Comcast spokeswoman, Jennifer Khoury, said 250 gigabytes was about 100 times the typical usage; the average customer uses two to three gigabytes a month. Less than 1 percent of customers exceed the cap, she said.
Many Internet providers reserve the right to cancel the service of the most excessive users. The 250-gigabyte cap is Comcast’s way of specifying a longstanding policy of placing a limit on Internet consumption, and it comes after customer pushed for a definition of excessive use.

Google licenses new satellite imagery

Google has agreed to license imagery for their mapping products from a satellite due to launch on September 4th. This new satellite can take detailed imagery for an area the size of New Mexico in one day. What does that mean? Well, you could get high resolution pan-sharpened imagery for the entire country in around 30 days. Impressive.
The level of detail will be approximately 50cm per pixel — that’s just under 20 inches. If you want to see what that looks like, take a look at this. Imagine having a Google Maps/Earth content that is this detailed, 100% complete and updated once a month — that’s powerful stuff. source:zdnet

Scrabulous developers face legal trouble

A popular application Scrabulous that was built around the concept of Scrabble has been banned by Facebook. The developers, brothers, Rajat and Jayant, have been served a legal notice by toymaker Mattel, that owns the rights to the original word-building game outside the United States.
Hasbro and Mattel launched their own official Scrabble app on Facebook but it has only 70,000 active users,as compared to the 500,00 daily users on Scrabulous (Only 10 percent of the number of Scrabulous users at its peak.)
Mattel approached the Indian courts earlier this year and the case is still pending. As a result India is the only country where Facebook users can still access the application. In light of their legal troubles, the Agarwalla brothers have launched another word-building game 'Wordscraper' which uses circles instead of squares, has a marginally different scoring system and lets users design their own boards.
The Agarwalla brothers renamed their app Wordscrapper and tweaked it so users could design their own boards, in a bid to avoid legal proceedings.
Jayant Agarwalla said: "It surprises us that Mattel chose to direct Facebook to take down Scrabulous without waiting for the decision [of the Indian courts]. Mattel's action speaks volumes about their business practices and respect for the judiciary."

Google with mobile US elections

With 10 weeks to go before the election, the amount of news coverage surrounding John McCain and Barack Obama is set to skyrocket (as if it hadn't already). In order to help you parse through all the chatter, Google has set up a special Web site where mobile phone users can find the latest headlines.
Google appears to be throwing everything it has at the upcoming presidential election. It is using multiple avenues and products to provide coverage. Google believes that plenty of people will be interested in accessing news from their mobile phones. So it set up a "one-stop-shop" for mobile phone users to get what they need.
The site is located at m.google.com/elections.
The products that it is tailoring to election coverage are mobile Search, News, Reader, YouTube, and Maps. Read

Microsoft urges users to stop using safari on windows

Microsoft security advisory: Blended Threat from Combined Attack Using Apple’s Safari on the Windows Platform
Microsoft on May 30, 2008 issued an advisory that warned windows users to not use apple's safari web browser until a patch is available that could stop the attackers to hack computers.
Microsoft Security Response Center (MSRC) issued a security advisory, which it called a "blended threat".
It is caused by a combination of a bug in Apple's Safari Web browser and the vulnerability in the way the Windows XP and Vista handle executable (exe) files on the desktop. This allows the remote execution of malicious code on all supported Windows XP and Vista when the Safari web browser for Windows is installed. This bug was disclosed 2 weeks ago by a researcher Nitesh Dhanjani.
Safari lacks an option to require a user's permission to download a file. Attackers, could populate a malicious site with a code that Safari that would automatically download to the desktop, which is the default location.
A combination of the default download location in Safari and how the Windows desktop handles executables creates a blended threat in which files may be downloaded to a user’s machine without prompting, allowing them to be executed. Safari is available as a stand-alone install or through the Apple Software Update application.
An attacker could trick users into visiting a specially crafted Web site that could download content to a user’s machine and execute the content locally using the same permissions as the logged-on user.

High bandwidth : The evil side

Scientists across the world are devising new techniques and are exploring other protocols to serve one purpose, a high bandwidth. Internet service providers are competing with each other to provide higher bandwidths to customers at competitive prices. The world is on the internet highway, where the speed limit is continuously increasing. We live, talk and socialize on the internet. Some of us met their life partners on the internet. Wow! what a life changing experience. Amidst all this positivity and development, there have been many people who have been affected. Some positively and a few negatively. The most affected people have been the movie producers. Their movies have been stolen, ripped and are available for download on forums across the world. For the internet user with a high bandwidth and a less price, it would take a few minutes to download the DVD rip of a movie. A movie once downloaded, will surely be circulated across and once his friends see the movie, they wouldn't actually spend money to go to the theater to watch them. If you are more patient, a week or two (maximum) after the movies release, pirated copies are available for less than $1. With high bandwidth comes the risk of huge file transfers (illegal). Recently some chinese suckers (hackers), hacked Indian defense websites, stealing vital information. I feel hacking is an achievement (of evil) in itself and hackers being the lord voldermort (the evil guy) of harry potter. Some times this evil is used by us, when we use and watch pirated stuff. It will take some hard work and smart effort by the antivirus and web security companies to curb the ill effect of high bandwidth

Teens are struggling on google

You have read it right. Teens are struggling on google (not literally) and so was I. I've been bad with my spellings and so when I was posting my previous blog entry on "How to make popular a struggling blog" I decided to type my version of the spelling on google.com to check whether it was correct or not, because if it is not correct then above the search results you get a red colored sentence "DID YOU MEAN". You can see it in the picture below. I wrote the wrong spelling just to show you the result. So as I finished writing my spelling, what I saw amazed me.Click on this image below to enlarge it and see the search results. 292,000 search results for struggling teens. Woah! that's not a good sign at all for the teens, or maybe the parents. I'm out of my teens so I don't need to worry and actually nobody needs to worry. Its just that 292,000 or less websites(people) thought about writing on struggling teens and this simply shows that it is searched more and read more. The idea of this post is not to scare or discourage anybody or even google. It is just an observation I made while checking my spelling. Small things lead you big observations and that means another blogpost. Mine is a Tech-No-Logy blog and although being from a technical background, I like looking at the other side of technology, the side which few of is look at.
If you have noticed some freaky results on google or any damn thing, make sure you comment about it.
As a safety measure
Please note : I have no intention of defaming or abusing any organization. It is just an observation.

Orkut and Open Social API : The beginning of a trend

Orkut is the most famous social networking websites in India. As the developers of orkut are facing problem in converting the popularity of the website into big bucks, the website is riding high on its powerful networking feature and easy interface. Recently (Nov last year ) Google introduced the opensocial application programming interface (API) following the trend started by Facebook.
I recently met two developers at the Delhi Bar camp 4 where they demonstrated how they had developed an application on Facebook last year and how it brought their server down within few months because of the enormous amount of traffic (million page views daily). Finally they decided to sell their application in January this year. Not a bad start for two students.
According to the CHIP magazine, 8 out of 19 applications on Orkut have been developed in India. A game Teen Patti is attracting a lot of people and is all set to become a rage in future. Teen patti which is a cards game played by people on festive occasions can be players between people and the players can chat with each other. It also has a ranking system that tells you who is the best player.
The successful social networking website Orkut is still proving to be a fat elephant to push in terms of revenue it is generating. Manu Rekhi, the product general manager of Google says that it is just a matter of time. It took three years to get the search revenue model right.

Antivirus companies are failing to keep up with the growing virus population

The sheer volume and complexity of computer viruses being released on the Internet today has the anti-virus industry on the defensive, experts say, underscoring the need for consumers to avoid relying on anti-virus software alone to keep their home computers safe and secure.
Approximately 5.5 million malicious software programs were unleashed on the Web last year, according to AV Test Labs, a German company that measures how quickly and accurately anti-virus products detect the latest malicious software, also known as "malware." That volume, AV said, forced anti-virus firms to analyze between 15,000 and 20,000 new specimens each day -- more than four times the daily average they found in 2006, and at least 15 times as many the company recorded in 2005. In the first two months of 2008 alone, AV Test found more than one million samples of malware spreading online.
